How to find out the IMEI number of your Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone

How to find out the IMEI number of your Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone

How to find out the IMEI number of your Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone

The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) can be a life-saver in certain instances - after all, it is a unique identity number that every phone has, and you could use it in a situation like when you retrieve your lost phone and you need to prove its yours.

Not just that, though: cellular networks use the IMEI number to identify devices and you can use it to block access of a device to a network.

So how do you find out the exact IMEI number of your iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone handset?

It’s in fact very easy to do with the IMEI USSD code. This is a kind of code that you type directly in the phone dialer. This same code will actually work on feature phones, earlier Symbian devices, and many more. Just type it in and you’ll get the IMEI number as a result:
IMEI USSD code: *#06#

Dual camera Huawei Honor 6 Plus leaks out a day before the announcement

We already told you that Huawei is prepping yet another representative of the Honor line of handsets, a 5.5" Honor 6 Plus smartphone, which appears to be toting two camera sensors in the rear. The device will be endowed by a 1.8 GHz SoC, probably a Kirin one, accompanied by the hefty amount of 3 GB of RAM, a 1080p 5.5-inch display, 16/32GB onboard storage, a microSD card slot, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat - all of these packed in a relatively compact body with metal frame on the sides, and overall dimensions of 150.4 x 75.68 x 7.5mm.

Although we are yet to find out how exactly the Huawei Honor 6 Plus will be making use of it unconventional rear camera setup, it comes close to mind that it could have similar functionality as HTC's undertaking with the Duo Camera of the HTC One (M8). We guess we'll find out pretty soon, on December 16, as the China-based manufacturer will officially lift the veil off of the handset on the date in question.

Poll: Is Samsung's dominion over the smartphone market coming to an end?

IDC: Smartphone Vendor Market Share 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011 Chart

What do you see when you look at that light green line up above? A massive dip in Samsung's smartphone sales volume, that's what.

This has been the story for the South Korean electronics giant's smartphone division as of late, and we know that the company won't stand idly – a near 10% drop in market share over the course of just one year is pretty worrying, after all.

From what we know so far, Samsung will be going with a two-pronged approach – first, it'll slash the absolutely ridiculous number of marginally different devices it produces by as much as 30%, and also invest in tech that competitors will have a hard (if not impossible) time mimicking or outright copying.

Right now, this means advanced display solutions, including foldable screens that the company claims it will be able to produce in small quantities (30,000 to 40,000 per month) in the latter half of 2015, but it could be working on something else entirely at the same time, too. In any case, unless it's able to come up with something in the meantime, the company might be looking at an equally depressing third quarter in 2015.

Do you think Samsung will be able to recuperate and regain its share in the short term (or ever)? Or do you think that we're looking at the end of Samsung's dominion over the smartphone market, at least in terms of market share?

Samsung might unveil the 'half-metal' Galaxy S6 as soon as CES in January, dual-edged version in tow

Marred by comparatively poor sales of its previous, Galaxy S5 flagship, Samsung might have decided to pull the Galaxy S6 announcement forward, or as soon as CES 2015 next month, claims Korean media. Not only will we be seeing the regular S6 announced then, but also the rumored dual-edged premium version, similar to the way Samsung revealed the Note 4 and Note Edge back in September.

Samsung is aiming at 45 million Galaxy S6 units sold, continues the business publication, citing a local Mirae Asset Securities analyst memo. Out of these, 10 million will be due to the dual-edged model, or so tell the demand forecasters over at the analyst shop. The handset is expected to have the newest chipsets, presumably Snapdragon 810 or Exynos 7 Octa, depending on the region, a Quad HD display and a high-res camera, which might be reserved for the dual-edged version only, though. We will apparently also get a "half-metal unibody", whatever that means - probably something in the styling of the new A-series and Note 4, which have a generous amount of metal elements around them.

It's all good new for those who are waiting for a more promising flagship from Samsung, and the company would really start the new year with a bang if it manages to unveil the S6 in January, prepping it for sales a few weeks after. This would indeed overshadow the launch of the Xperia Z4, Huawei's D8, or HTC's (M9), all of which are expected to come by the time spring has descended upon us.

Google will continue to sell the Nexus 5 through the first quarter of 2015

Google will continue to sell the Nexus 5 through the first quarter of 2015

Google will continue to sell the Nexus 5 through the first quarter of 2015

Google has decided to keep offering the Nexus 5 through the first quarter of 2015, even though the new Nexus 6 phablet has been available for some time. While earlier reports suggested that Google would stop producing the older handset and let inventories simply disappear ("Once they're gone, they're gone," a Google spokesman reportedly said), a new report says that Google will continue to make sure that the 5-inch stock Android handset will remain available from now through at least March 2015.

Google has removed the red and white versions of the Nexus 5 from the Google Play Store, leaving only the black variant in both 16GB and 32GB models. Both of those versions are in stock, and leave the warehouse in one to two business days after being ordered.

The large price difference between the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6, and the difference in screen size, means that both models do not compete against each other. That means that Google is in no rush to stop selling the older handset. The 5-inch Nexus 5 is priced at $349 (16GB) and $399 (32GB) while the 6-inch Nexus 6 is priced at $649 (32 GB) and $699 (64 GB).
